Our program is an arts integration magnet school for grades 5-8. As 5th graders, students develop an awareness and appreciation for strings (introductory violin class), chorus, visual arts, dance, and drama. As 6th graders, they select a "focus," or a fine arts area that they will explore every day for the next three years. In addition to the focus art area, students continue to take quarter- or semester-long "rotations" of other art areas and electives. Simply put, my students are my favorite musicians. The excitement that they bring to our classroom each day is inspiring. Being enrolled in an orchestra class teaches children how to work together. Playing an instrument in an ensemble promotes teamwork, leadership skills, and confidence that will continue to benefit students for years to come.
