We are a rural Pre-K thru 5 Title I school in Western North Carolina. Our community has been hit hard by loss of industry; subsequently our unemployment is over 8%. Median household income is more than 50% below the state average. Our school currently has over 80% of its population receiving free/reduced lunch. These local economic challenges, in combination with diminished funding at the state & federal level, has left our school lacking in many basic tools & supplies. In addition, we are also a community that is geographically isolated with the nearest urban area being 100 miles away. With all of these challenges and many burdened with lower academic successes, my students come to class eager & excited, curious & tenacious. They want to learn, to achieve, “…to do something great.”
